The Vineyard has been my home-away-from-home since the late 1950’s. As long as I can remember Chappaquiddick, while always asserting its independence as an island, was more often than not connected by a narrow strip of sand to its geological mother, Noepe (the name given to Martha’s Vineyard by the Wampanoags.) Yes, Chappy was an island wannabe.
All that changed in 2007, when an angry storm churned up the east coast with a mind all its own and snipped the narrow life line at Norton Point.
Since then, Chappy and Noepe have been trying to get reacquainted. The video shown here, filmed on February 18, 2015, suggests that it might be soon. I remember that a generation ago, my youngest daughter Johanna was playing in the placid then-landlocked waters of Katama Bay. Once the breach happened eight years ago, all that changed. It was Johanna who sent me this video and I hope you will enjoy it as much as I continue to do. For me, it reinforced an important lesson – the only constant in life is change.
